Buckle those you love close to your heart


My beloved Grandmother on her wedding day

How true:


I grew up in the 50s/60's with practical parents. A mother, God love her,
who washed aluminum foil after she cooked in it, then reused it. She was
the original recycle queen, before they had a Name for it... A father who
was happier getting old shoes fixed than buying new ones.



Their marriage was good, their dreams focused. Their best friends lived
barely a wave away. I can see them now, Dad in trousers, tee shirt and a hat
and Mom in a house dress, lawn mower in one hand, and dish-towel in the
other. It was the time for fixing things. A curtain rod, the kitchen radio,
screen door, the oven door, the hem in a dress Things we keep.





It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All that re-fixing,
eating, renewing, I wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant affluence.
Throwing things away meant you knew there'd always be more.





But then my mother died, and on that clear summer's night, in the warmth of
the hospital room, I was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes
there isn't any more.



Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and goes away...never to
return. So... While we have it.. it's best we love it.. And care for it...
And fix it when it's broken.... And heal it when it's sick.





This is true... For marriage.... And old cars... And children with bad
report cards..... Dogs and cats with bad hips.... And aging parents.... And
grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth
it. Some things we keep. Like a best friend that moved away or a classmate
we grew up with.



There are just some things that make life important, like people we know
who are special.... And so, we keep them close!



I received this from someone who thinks I am a 'keeper', so I've sent it to
the people I think of in the same way... Now it's your turn to send this to
those people that are "keepers" in your life. Good friends are like
stars.... You don't always see them, but you know they

are always there.

I love you




One day a woman's husband died, and on that clear, cold morning, in the
warmth of their bedroom, the wife was struck with the pain of learning that
sometimes there isn't anymore. No more hugs, no more special moments to
celebrate together, no more phone calls just to chat, no more "just one
minute." Sometimes, what we care about the most gets all used up and goes
away, never to return before we can say good-bye, or say "I love you."

So while we have it, it's best we love it, care for it, fix it when it's
broken and heal it when it's sick. This is true for relationships... and
old cars...children with bad report cards, dogs with bad hips, and aging
parents and grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it, because
we are worth it.

Some things we keep---like a best friend who moved away or a classmate we
grew up with. They just make us happy, no matter what.

Life is important, like people we know who are special. And so, we keep
them close. Do all your friends know you love them?

Let every one of your friends, and loved ones know.
You would be amazed at what those three little words and a smile can
do.

We went with our friends to some enthic festivals last night.
We tried out the Italian one and the Greek one.

We had lovely food and went to an Italian bakery
purchased some gourmet goodies and came back to our place to have
them with coffee.
Fabulous friends and food and a gorgeous June night.
Today we are having my Sister and her husband over for a lovely meal.
Summer is for sharing all of its joys.

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be IT.

The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded. But trust me, in 20 years you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked.

You are NOT as fat as you imagine.

Don't worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

Sing.

Don't be reckless with other people's hearts, don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss.

Don't waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long, and in the end, it's only with yourself.

Remember compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch.

Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still don't.

Get plenty of calcium.

Be kind to your knees, you'll miss them when they're gone.

Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't, maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't, maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself, either. Your choices are half chance, so are everybody else's. Enjoy your body, use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it, or what other people think of it, it's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.

Dance. Even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room.

Read the directions, even if you don't follow them.

Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents, you never know when they'll be gone for good.

Be nice to your siblings; they are your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go, but for the precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography in lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.

Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old, and when you do you'll fantasize that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders.

Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one might run out.

Don't mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen.

LIFE

Life isn't about keeping score.
It's not about how many friends you have

It's about jealousy, fear, ignorance, and revenge.
It's about carrying inner hate and love, letting it grow, and spreading

But most of all, it's about using your life to touch or poison other
people's hearts in such a way that could have never occurred alone.

I had lots of fun this week with 3 different friends on 3 different days.
My husband had another fabulous seminar and returned home last night happy
and we were all glad things went so well again as I knew they would.
Now we have a graduation party on Friday night for my cousin's daughter in Michigan
and celebrating to do for Father's Day!
I must pace pace pace pace so very carefully so today and Friday day time will be quiet
time and rejuvination time.

Choose a Life that Matters

Ready or not, some day it will all come to an end. There will be no more
sunrises, no minutes, hours or days. All the things you collected, whether
treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else. Your wealth, fame and
temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance. It will not matter what you
owned or what you were owed. Your grudges, resentments, frustrations, and
jealousies will finally disappear. So, too, your hopes, ambitions, plans,
and to-do lists will expire. The wins and losses that once seemed so
important will fade away. It won't matter whether you were beautiful or
brilliant. Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant.

So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured?

What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built; not what you
got, but what you gave. What will matter is not your success, but your
significance. What will matter is not what you learned, but what you taught.
What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage or sacrifice
that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example.

What will matter is not your competence, but your character. What will
matter is not how many people you knew, but how many will feel a lasting
loss when you're gone. What will matter is not your memories, but the
memories that live in those who loved you. What will matter is how long you
will be remembered, by whom and for what.

Life Explained




Life is short~!
Make FUN of it

On the first day God created the dog.

God said, "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. I will give you a life span of twenty years."

The dog said, "That's too long to be barking. Give me ten years - you can keep the other ten." So God agreed.

On the second day, God created the monkey.


God said, "Entertain people, do monkey tricks, make them laugh. I'll give you a twenty-year life span."


The monkey said, "How boring, monkey tricks for twenty years? I don't think so. Dog gave ten years back to you, so that's what I'll do too, okay?" And God agreed.

On the third day, God created the cow.


God said, "You must go to the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer. I will give you a life span of sixty years."


The cow said, "That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. Let me have twenty and you can keep the other forty." And God agreed again.

On the forth day God created man. God said, "Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. I'll give you twenty years."


Man said, "What? Only twenty years! Tell you what, I'll take my twenty, and the forty the cow gave back and the ten the monkey gave back and the ten the dog gave back, that makes eighty, okay?"


"Okay," said God, "You've got a deal."


So that is why the first twenty years we eat, sleep, play, and enjoy ourselves; for the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family; for the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren; and for the last ten years we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.

The Bathing Suit


Smile darlings!


When I was a child in the 1960s, the bathing suit for the mature figure was boned,
trussed and reinforced, not so much sewn as engineered. They were built to hold
back and uplift and they did a good job.

Today's stretch fabrics are designed for the prepubescent girl with a figure
carved from a potato chip.

The mature woman has a choice - she can either go up front to the maternity department
and try on a floral suit with a skirt, coming away looking like a hippopotamus who escaped from Disney's Fantasia or she can wander around every run of the mill department store trying to make a sensible choice from what amounts to a designer range of florescent rubber bands.

What choice did I have? I wandered around, made my sensible choice and entered
the chamber of horrors known as the fitting room. The first thing I noticed was
the extraordinary tensile strength of the stretch material.

The Lycra used in bathing costumes was developed, I believe, by NASA to launch
small rockets from a slingshot, which give the added bonus that if you manage to
actually lever yourself into one, you are protected from shark attacks as any shark
taking a swipe at your passing midriff would immediately suffer whiplash.

I fought my way into the bathing suit, but as I twanged the shoulder strap in place,
I gasped in horror - my boobs had disappeared!

Eventually, I found one boob cowering under my left armpit. It took a while to find the
other. At last I located it flattened beside my seventh rib. The problem is that modern bathing suits have no bra cups. The mature woman is meant to wear her boobs spread across her chest like a speed bump.

I realigned my speed bump and lurched toward the mirror to take a full view assessment. The bathing suit fit all right, but unfortunately it only fit those bits of me willing to
stay inside it. The rest of me oozed out rebelliously from top, bottom, and sides. I looked like a lump of play dough wearing undersized cling wrap.

As I tried to work out where all those extra bits had come from, the prepubescent
sales girl popped her head through the curtain, "Oh, there you are!" she said,
admiring the bathing suit.

I replied that I wasn't so sure and asked what else she had to show me.

I tried on a cream crinkled one that made me look like a lump of masking tape,
and a floral two-piece which gave the appearance of an oversized napkin in a
serving ring.

I struggled into a pair of leopard skin bathers with ragged frills and came out looking
like Tarzan's Jane, pregnant with triplets and having a rough day.

I tried on a black number with a midriff and looked like a jellyfish in mourning.

I tried on a bright pink pair with such a high cut leg I thought I would have to wax
my eyebrows to wear them. Finally, I found a suit that fit ... a two-piece affair with
a shorts style bottom and a loose blouse-type top.

It was cheap, comfortable, and bulge-friendly, so I bought it. My ridiculous search
had a successful outcome, I figured. When I got home, I found a label, which read - "Material might become transparent in water."

So, if you happen to be on the beach or near any other body of water this year and
I'm there too .. I'll be the one in cut off jeans and a T-shirt.

Will I ever get used to her new address being Heaven?

1. I was born during holy week, April 8th, in the 1950's, on a Tuesday.
2. I am still quite shy at times........with those I do not know well.
3. I would rather be a first rate version of myself rather than a carbon copy of someone else!
4. Our travels to Asia lately were a trip of a lifetime and so beautiful........
5. I'm a sensitive soul. I miss our two fur angels that went to Heaven in 2007 immensely!
Mom must have needed my fur angel companions..........
6. I was born and raised in Ontario Canada and I don't like change............
7. I've been married 13 years to a fantastic husband I have nicknamed Handsome Guy!
8. Doing what I love best each and every day........Domestic Goddess!
9. I love all music pretty well and listen to it constantly
10. I'm terrible at good-byes
11. I love to embrace my bliss, I am very good at this!

81. I'm not athletic.
82. I collect children's books, The Giving Tree has been and always will be a favorite

84. I'm ever thankful for technology!
85. I don't like negative people.
86. I don't watch soap operas.
87. I like to send lots of greeting cards!
88. I have a thing for cashmere, especially handsome men in black Cashmere dress coats!
89. I love Target stores and wish we had them here in Canada.
90. After 13 years at my current job,
domestic Goddess, I love it more each day!
91. I'm starting to feel the time passes far tooooooo quickly!

To celebrate growing older,
I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me.
It is the most-requested column I've ever written. My odometer rolls over to 50 this week, so here's an update:
1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
4. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
5. Pay off your credit cards every month.
6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.
8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.
9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.
10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.
12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.
13. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.
15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.
16. Life is too short for long pity parties. Get busy living, or get busy dying.
17. You can get through anything if you stay put in today.
18. A writer writes. If you want to be a writer, write.
19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.
20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.
21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.
22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.
23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.
24. The most important sex organ is the brain.
25. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: "In five years, will this matter?"
27. Always choose life.
28. Forgive everyone everything.
29. What other people think of you is none of your business.
30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.

44. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

46. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
47. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
48. If you don't ask, you don't get.

50. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift.

They had a day off this week for Veteran's day in Seoul)
About thirty of them had a picnic on an island and enjoyed
their day as they do everyday.
They make the most of life.

I miss my beloved Mother


My late beloved Mother was so beautiful inside and out.
Every one thought she was a lady of class and elegance
and grace and beauty.
She lives on forever in all of our hearts.


Ever since I got back from Asia I am missing my beloved Mother more than ever and almost went through the profound grief all over again. It is so easy to get all wrapped up in another part of the world and momentarily forget all the sadness that has happened since last summer.................and the deaths since then. None of us are any strangers to pain and loss.

My husband and I went to visit my Mom's grave and my late Sister Sharon's yesterday. It will soon be a year August 12th, 2007 that Mom will have been in Heaven one year on that date.

It has been a long long long difficult time this jagged journey of grief.

I miss my beloved Mother more than words can ever say!

Our Parish is joining with another Parish and we will build a new church close to our home.
Our new church will be called "The Good Shepherd" Roman Catholic Church.
We have excellent priests and are truly blessed. I have mixed emotions about St. Gregory's being
torn down in about a year. I am full of sentiment and all the things that have happened in my life
since I joined that Parish in 1978. A long long history is hard to build with this fast paced
transient society.
Life is a series of new beginnings.

We took our grand angels out this morning with their Dad and had a nice little visit with them all.
They are getting big and getting ready for summer...........
It has been raining most of today and everything looks lush and green and prosperous.
The sounds of nature are everywhere as are the sights.

A bundle of joy for Grandparents Rui & Sherry Coutinho and Todd Windibank & Tracey. Excited Great Grandparents are Lyle & Dorreen Ouellette, Robert Hughes, Lorne Windibank. Smiling from Heaven is Grandma Sherry Windibank, Great Grandma's Shirly Hughes, Lorraine Windibank and Manual & Helena Coutinho. Mariah is also welcomed by many Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. A special thank you to Dr. Bourke & Dr. Jasey and nursing staff at Met for a safe delivery.
